I spend alot of time at high school football and basketball games (what else is there to do here on the weekend) and have heard my fair share of unkind words and comments from fans over the years. To me a fan is someone who cheers for their team and its players and can yell at the refs occasionally when calls do not go your way :) A fanatic is someone who yells at opposing teams players and coaches and parents and is usually ignorant (as in uninformed) as to what they are saying. I try not to get too caught up in it all, but will admit that my competitive nature sometimes gets the best of me. I've even had the chance to have a "discussion" with an opposing team's parent after I heard him say for at least the fifth time some not so kind remarks about one the high school football players. Of course, being from a town that is known for its religious beliefs, that somehow always gets thrown into the conversation, even if it is not relevant to the "discussion". This past weekend the girls basketball team that I help coach played in a game against a town that is close by so of course there is some history between the two teams. The history being that we've been beating them since grade 8.
There was a fanatic, er fan, sitting across on the other side of the court, yelling at Steve and then she got going on his wife who happened to be sitting close by. It is just amazing to me that a middle aged woman can behave like that in public. Anyways we beat them by 26 and I am sure there will be more fun when we play them again.
This town that we happened to be playing in has some fond memories for me from high school. I was reminded of a little incident with Captain Cougar and some fans in the "barn". That was a crazy night. Basketball in Southern Alberta, you gotta love it!!

EGADS!!! Are you kidding me??? That is too crazy! Pretty sad that some people never grow up huh!!!
Crazy memories of Captain Cougar!!! That was a pretty scary and crazy night that is for sure!!! Probably one of my most remembered HS experiences!!!
I say...keep taking it to them on the court...nothing says Shut Up...like a good ole fashioned whooping!!!
I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who doesn't recall every detail of the Captain Cougar incident. I'm so disappointed in my otherwise fantastic memory (right!).
Beating the other team by 26 points is enough of a response to the crazyland lady. How embarassing. People should film the cukoos and send them a tape a couple of years later.
BTW, how did I miss the fact that you have a blog? I swear I've clicked on your name from my own blog comments but wasn't ever directed until two days ago. Sheesh. I could have been leaving all sorts of ramblings on your posts...kind of like now. Anyway, I added you to my blogs list if that's not too buggy and expect to "hear" from me a little more frequently now. I love SHELLEY!
Boy -- I too have had to evaluate what sort of fan I want to be over the years after many soccer matches. I USED to be a crazy yeller -- not so much in a negative way -- just loud and obnoxious for my own son. My -- how I've changed -- since I've now seen too many things go wrong in sporting events -- including Captain Cougar and Mr. Gladstone. I certainly remember that. I try not to say ANYTHING to a ref or ANYONE be it parent/player on the other team, and limit my cheering generally to positive statements towards my own son and his team mates. I've learned that probs can't happen (generally) if you keep your mouth SHUT! I'm still working on that concept with my husband . . . moreso OFF the field!! I agree with Lynette, and remind my son to ignore the drama and let your skills and teamwork speak louder than words!! Sounds great in theory, huh? Hey -- try being in a women's Hispanic indoor soccer league. Now THERE'S DRAMA --- every week. There's a policeman at the facility if that tells you anything. I actually find humor in it - and am always curious what drama will happen each week. The Hispanic fans are also very enthusiastic -- fortunately I never really know what they're saying, but its sure fun to guess!!
I always wonder how the children of the psycho parents feel. I know as a teen I would have died of embarassment.
From what I hear though, Shelley, you are one heck of a coach! Steve said you guys are doing fantastically well. Aren't you guys ranked like 2nd in the province or something? Good luck with the tourney!!!!!
